Khan Hung Meng

His name is always mentioned in the same breath as the former greats of Malaysian football, and he played at an era where the game here still packed the terraces. He’s MyTeam FC’s coach Khan Hung Meng.

Hung Meng was appointed as Assistant Coach to Bojan Hodak in September 2006, and their double team saw MyTeam FC gaining promotion to the Super League within a year of making their debut in the M-League. Hung Meng had no second thoughts about joining MyTeam FC then, regardless of the fact that the team was managed by unknowns in Malaysian football. Hung Meng’s take on the management was that they were young and more enthusiastic about football than any other team he had worked with previously. The people at MyTeam were really interested about building a football team. Keeping his faith in head coach Bojan, Hung Meng dived into the job head-first.

As a coach, Hung Meng made his foray into the game quite recently, only 4 years ago, when MKLand appointed him as Head Coach for their squad in 2004. Similar to MyTeam, MKLand were an unknown quantity then, and Hung Meng guided them to runner-up spot in the Premier League, in their debut season. However, back then only the Premier League champs were promoted to the Super League. In 2005, he guided MKLand to third place in the Premier League, missing out on promotion once more. The corridors of power in FAM then banned MKLand from continuing their involvement in the M-League, and Hung Meng was left in the lurch. However, for a coach of his quality, the wait was a short one. He was roped in to save yet another sinking ship, Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya (MPPJ) in 2006 replacing B.Sathianathan, who left for National duty. Helming his first Super League team and taking over a squad low on morale and next to bottom in the standings, Hung Meng’s Selangor MPPJ escaped relegation, finishing sixth in a period of uncertainty where their status as a team in the M-League was about to go the same route as MKLand did. The team were banished by the Selangor government and Hung Meng, who holds the FAM ‘A’ License was quickly snapped up by MyTeam, who were then embarking on a grand mission to change Malaysian football following the success of the MyTeam 1 reality football show.

The Penang born lad began his playing career at the tender age of 15. At 21, Hung Meng donned the colours of the Pearl of the Orient, but his explosive performance down the left flank caught Selangor’s eye. It was a era of successes in Malaysian football at that time, and the who’s who of the game usually plied their trade with the Red Giants. Back then Selangor and Singapore took turns to rule the roost. Moving to Selangor in 1981, Hung Meng spent his entire career there till 1992, where he hung up his boots. He certainly led a colourful career in Klang Valley with a number of accolades and honours at the National and International level that would make many envy him. He was a four-time Malaysia Cup winner in 1981, 1982, 1984 & 1986. He was also League champions with Selangor in 1984, and bagged the Charity Shield in 1984. In his five years playing for Malaysia from 1982 till 1987, Hung Meng helped Malaysia emerge as Merdeka Cup champions in 1986. He also gained a SEA Games Bronze medal in 1983.

At MyTeam, Hung Meng is tasked as the No.2 man, second in-command to Bojan. Known for his trademark work ethic, he’s penchant for the positives in motivating players always does wanders for the players.
